Schaal one of three preeminent scientists named as U.S. science envoys

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced Nov. 8 the appointment of three new science envoys, including Barbara A. Schaal, PhD, the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences. The science envoys advise the White House, the U.S. Department of State and the national scientific community. Schaal becomes WUSTL’s next dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences in January.

Vitamin D prevents clogged arteries in diabetics

People with diabetes often develop clogged arteries that cause heart disease. New research at the School of Medicine shows that when vitamin D levels are adequate in people with diabetes, blood vessels are less likely to clog. In patients with insufficient vitamin D, immune cells bind to blood vessels near the heart, then trap cholesterol to block those blood vessels.

Olin Cup finalists announced

Alum Robbie Garrison (left), of MMBiosensing LLC, talks with Ken Harrington, managing director of the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, following the selection of Garrison’s firm as one of seven finalists for the 2012 Olin Cup.  The finalists are competing for a $50,000 first-place and $20,000 second-place award to be announced in January.

Women’s basketball opens season at home Friday

Women’s basketball opens the 2012-13 season by hosting the 12th Annual McWilliams Classic Friday-Saturday, Nov. 16-17, at the Field House. The men’s team begins regular season play Saturday, Nov. 17, against Trinity University (Texas). Tip-off is 2 p.m. in Chicago.
